Small Business Website Checklist for Canada: 15 Things Your Site Needs in 2026

Small Business Website Checklist for Canada: 15 Things Your Site Needs in 2026

For most Canadian small businesses, the website is the first impression, the main source of leads and the place customers check before they call. Yet many business websites in Surrey, Vancouver and across Canada are slow, hard to use on a phone, or invisible on Google. This checklist covers the 15 things every small business website needs in 2026, grouped so you can audit your own site in about 20 minutes.

How to use this checklist

Open your website on your phone and go through each section. Every “no” is a lost lead waiting to be fixed. If you score fewer than 10 out of 15, your website is probably costing you customers.

Part 1: Speed and mobile (the basics Google checks first)

  1. Loads fast on a phone. Google’s Core Web Vitals target is for the main content to appear within 2.5 seconds. Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights.
  2. Does not jump around while loading. Text and buttons moving as images load (layout shift) frustrates visitors and hurts rankings.
  3. Easy to use with one thumb. Buttons large enough to tap, text readable without zooming, no tiny menus.
  4. Secure (HTTPS). The padlock in the browser is essential. Without it, browsers warn visitors your site is “not secure.”

Part 2: Turning visitors into customers

  1. A clear headline above the fold that says what you do and where: “IT support for Surrey businesses,” not “Welcome to our website.”
  2. One obvious call to action on every page: call, book, request a quote or buy.
  3. Click-to-call phone number in the header on mobile.
  4. Short contact forms. Every extra field reduces submissions. Ask only for what you need, and protect the form from spam.
  5. Proof: real reviews, client logos, case studies and photos of your actual team.

Improving these is exactly what conversion optimisation and dedicated landing page design are for.

Part 3: Being found on Google

  1. A separate page for each service. One page that lists everything ranks for nothing. Each service deserves its own page with its own keywords.
  2. Location signals. Your city and service areas in page titles, content and contact details, matching your Google Business Profile exactly. Read our local SEO guide for Canadian businesses.
  3. Unique page titles and meta descriptions on every page, written for people, not stuffed with keywords.
  4. Helpful content that answers real customer questions, such as pricing guides, comparisons and how-tos. This blog is an example.

Our on-page SEO, technical SEO and content SEO services cover these in detail.

Part 4: Looking after it

  1. Updated and backed up. WordPress core, themes and plugins need regular updates; out-of-date plugins are a common way sites get hacked. Ongoing website maintenance takes care of this.
  2. Good hosting. Cheap, overloaded hosting makes every other improvement harder. Fast, secure website hosting with server-level caching makes a visible difference.

Score yourself

ScoreWhat it meansNext step
13 to 15Strong websiteFocus on content and marketing to grow traffic
10 to 12Good base with gapsFix the missing items, starting with speed and calls to action
Below 10Losing leads every dayConsider a redesign built for mobile, speed and SEO

Redesign or fix what you have?

If your site is built on WordPress and scores 10 or more, targeted fixes are usually enough. If it is more than five or six years old, not mobile-friendly, or built on a platform you cannot edit yourself, a new site is often faster and cheaper in the long run. Our WordPress development and business website development services build sites with this checklist in mind from day one. Selling products online? Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a small business website?

A typical 5 to 15 page business website takes about four to eight weeks, depending mostly on how quickly content and feedback are ready.

Is WordPress good for small businesses in Canada?

Yes. WordPress powers a large share of the web, is easy to update yourself, and has strong SEO tools. The key is a fast theme, few plugins and regular maintenance.

Do I need a new website to rank on Google?

Not always. Many sites improve rankings with better page titles, faster loading, location pages and helpful content, without a full rebuild.
