Most Surrey businesses do not need to choose between cloud and on-premise. They need someone to work through it system by system and be honest about which ones should move, which ones should stay, and which ones are not worth touching yet.
What almost always moves first: email and documents. There is no remaining reason for a small business to run its own mail server, and Microsoft 365 handles file sharing, version history and remote access better than a server in a cupboard ever did.
What often stays: applications that require a local server, and work involving very large files. Dental practice management, manufacturing control systems, engineering drawings, video production — opening a four-gigabyte file across the internet is a different experience from opening it on a local network, and no bandwidth upgrade fully closes that gap.
What matters most either way: backup. Cloud providers protect their own infrastructure, not your data from being deleted — by an attacker, or by someone on your team. Ransomware and accidental deletion both sync to the cloud perfectly well. A separate backup with its own retention is still required, and it still needs to be restore-tested rather than assumed.
On data residency: private-sector businesses in British Columbia are not required to keep data in Canada, but under BC PIPA you remain accountable for protecting it wherever it sits. Canadian data residency is available from Microsoft if you want it. We document which country your data is in either way, because being able to answer that question in writing is part of the obligation.
